Onyx Storm: Chapter 6
Good thing Violet got a conduit handed to her a chapter or two ago, because otherwise she'd be losing this fight. Because she can't aim.
I'm just kidding, Yarros would never let Violet lose.
Oh, are we finally going to address the insanity that is Basgiath's explicit policy of letting their rider cadets KILL EACH OTHER? I'm sorry, I know this is supposed to be Violet being a badass, but I can't get over this. Like, it's bad enough that Yarros wrote that shit and no one stopped her, but the fact that nothing was done with it, three books into the series, is insane.
And Violet's badassery is confined to this single speech, because a couple of paragraphs later the professors arrive to break up the fighting.
Can't let a single chapter go by without a character pausing to tell us how great Violet is, guys. Can't let it happen. Otherwise the reader might form their opinion based on Violet's actions. Oh, and it turns out the professors were actually hanging out just watching all that happen, just to see how it would play out.
And oh no. OH NO. It's the worst thing that could happen. The professors announce that BATTLE BRIEF IS BACK.
I thought we were free!
Aaric, Violet, and Xaden meet up with Brennan and some council member to discuss the treaty terms. Other people have discovered Aaric's secret, I guess, but somehow his own father has not. You would think someone else would have, considering the best and brightest become riders and presumably there are kids with high-ranked parents other than Violet and Dain present. But no.
Anyways, Aaric's brother, Halden was present for the treaty negotiations, and he's going with Violet on her mission.
However, while Andarna got most of her demands and the Aretian riders are going to be pardoned...the treaty has fallen through. Brennan seems chill about this, saying the fliers can stay in Basgiath while they try again for a treaty later, but I feel like this should be a bigger deal. But whatever. Xaden is brooding--turns out the king gave him his seat in the Senarium and his title back as part of the negotiations.
That makes sense. The Aretian riders walking would cripple the Navarre military, and it would create the possibility of Aretia treatying with Poromiel independently. Better to cede to their demands and consolidate their power.
Violet and her squad have all been cryptically talking about Plan B for a while now, so I guess we're going to find out what that is. Hopefully that will happen before we are forced to sit through another classroom scene. Chapter end.

“The only reason you survived the attack is because we gained access to the knowledge Navarre purposely hid from us. We stole it. We translated it. We saved your ass.” Warmth streaks down my arm, the conduit beginning to hum. “And yes, we expect you to recognize that we need this alliance to survive what’s coming for us!”
“You expect us to trust them?” Caroline calls out.
Aura retreats a step, eyeing my conduit.
“You have to,” I answer, pushing against the heat that flushes my skin as power gathers within me again. “But more importantly, you can. They’ve fought by our side for months, even after we’ve spent centuries condemning their people to death because we’re unwilling to share the one resource that could have saved them. We don’t have to like each other, but we do have to trust each other, and we can’t keep doing this, can’t keep accepting needless casualties in the quadrant in the name of strengthening the wing, not when every single one of us is needed in this war.”

“Die now or die later, what’s the difference?” someone from Second Wing asks.
“Die now, and the scribes will call your name in the morning.” Emetterio shrugs. “Choose to fight your common enemy, and there’s a chance you’ll live to graduate. Personally”—he scratches his beard—“I like our odds. The last time a shadow and lightning wielder fought side by side, they managed to drive the venin back into the Barrens for a few hundred years. We’ll figure out how to do it again.”

I need to find a cure, and that means saving the alliance tonight…
Even if it means I’ll be a traitor by morning.
