Narelle is a good guy. We know this because she immediately starts talking about how Xaden is hot and his and Violet's relationship is super special.

I shake my head. “Deverelli don’t worship gods.”

“It’s why we’re considered the most neutral of the isles. Perfect for trade.” Narelle shrugs. “What you call gods, we call science. What you call fate, we call coincidence. What you call the divine intervention of love, we call…” She flourishes her hand. “Alchemy. Two substances combined to make something entirely new, not unlike what’s between the two of you.” She glances between Xaden and me and sets her hand on her chest.
Well, she mistakes Xaden for Dain at first, based on Asher's correspondence. But still.

Also, since when do the Navarre people care about the divine intervention of love? That's literally never come up before. For that matter, the gods barely exist in this book, either, there's no sense that people blame them for their problems or believe in them deeply. Nor have we seen that Violet's culture places a high value on a predestined fate.

So this is just nonsense because Yarros doesn't have the skill to build realistic cultures.

I also would love to know why Asher spent this much time telling a foreign merchant about his daughter's...not even her love life, she and Dain didn't have a relationship. About a guy his daughter happened to have a crush on.

Narelle tells Violet that she has her father's books, and will give them to her if Violet can answer three questions. Because the treasure that her father told her to bring to Narelle isn't a jewel, it's her mind. Because of course it fucking is.

Thankfully, these questions are about the Krovlan Uprising, so we're finally going to find out what that is.

It seems like the Krovlan people rebelled against the Poromish, and then were quelled by the Poromish king when the Deverelli stopped supporting their uprising. Narelle's second question is about why Violet thinks that happened; presumably this is the big secret Violet was holding back earlier in the book for no reason.

“Apply your superior linguistics skills, Dain,” I prompt him. “The interrogation was recorded in the common tongue—”

Dain’s eyes widen. “But the raiders spoke Krovlish, and descriptors follow nouns in Krovlish. They were hunting feathertails. Dragons.”

I nod. “I think Deverelli brokered a deal with Krovla and an unnamed isle that the isle would provide the army and Krovla would provide dragons. When they were unable to do so, the deal fell apart, the Midnight Massacre happened, and Krovla remained a part of Poromiel.”

Okay, so this is...related to the plot of this book how? Does it have to do with the irids somehow? I guess we'll find out. Narelle's third question is, of course, about Violet's love life, the only subject of importance in this fucking book. Specifically, she wants to know why Violet broke it off with Halden. Violet says she dumped him because she walked in on him banging a professor, which is proof of how great she is and proof that she's worthy of her father's books.

These tests seem like terrible ways to assess Violet's readiness to receive her father's life work.

Violet gets six passcode-locked books from Narelle, and Mira gets to be jealous that the books were meant only for Violet and her father didn't think of her. Which is fair, honestly, it does seem like both of the Sorrengail parents played favorites.

Next scene.

Violet is in the bath, relaxing, when Xaden comes in. They're horny for each other and start kissing. The chapter ends. There is no need for this to be two chapters, just fucking finish the sex scene in this one and let us move on, oh my god.
