penwallaXaden and Violet fuck. I'm not going to recap that bit, I don't think these sex scenes are great but they're also not egregious, if you like romance novels I think they're fine. Once the banging is over, though, Violet suggests they stay in Deverelli with Tecarus for a while to keep Xaden safe from the venin inside him, so that they can keep working on a cure.
I mean, I think you hurt Sgaeyl pretty badly by becoming a venin, Xaden.
Also, Violet knows all the dragons don't have magic here, and Tairn and Andarna explicitly told her that was a problem earlier in the book. So while I understand her desire to protect Xaden, she should already know it's not safe for the dragons to live here, because she was told this. And she's supposed to be smart.
Before they can have any more conversation, everyone shows up in the hallway to demand Violet's presence.
Because the king of Deverelli has decided to kidnap Halden, so now Xaden, the only aristocrat, has to go rescue him. Which begs the question of why he didn't go in the first place! Chapter end.
Most of this chapter is a sex scene, so there's not much to say. Except that Violet's complete thoughtlessness about her dragons is just a reminder that the only relationship that matters in this book is the one she has with Xaden--every other character is either her opponent or her accessory. And arguably Xaden is also just there to be in love with Violet, because the book isn't interested in any other aspect of him, either.
“Here as in Deverelli.” I run my fingers along his jaw. “I can take Tecarus’s offer… if Tairn and Andarna agree. I’m sure they would if it means you stop all progression until I can find a cure. You and Sgaeyl could stay here while I do the research—”
He slides his thumb over my lips. “She’s in pain.”
I blink. How could I have missed that? Guilt weighs down my shoulders.
“All the dragons are, I think, not that they’ll admit it, but I don’t think they can survive— or at least thrive the way they do at home— away from magic. I could never cause Sgaeyl pain.” He skims his callused hand down the side of my neck and over my ribs to settle on the slope of my waist. “And I could never let you abandon everyone you love.”
