Silver Elite: Chapter 6
Jul. 25th, 2025 01:04 pmWren's been locked up alone for three hours. (Does this interrogation room have a clock? Does Wren have her watch? How does she know this?)
She puts on a show for the camera, even as she tries to telepathically link with someone else. No one responds to her, so she has to tough it out until her captors return.
This time, it's one of the previous soldiers, hot violent guy...and Jayde Valence, the super-strong telepath mentioned in an earlier chapter.
Wren attempts this technique on Jayde, relying on the training Julian gave her. She is initially successful, and Jayde leaves, declaring that she's "clean". Then hot violent guy orders Wren be taken elsewhere to wait for him. Scene end.
That was kind of anti-climactic, honestly.
Wren is taken to a cell somewhere, where she has a mental breakdown. Understandable. She's wracked with guilt about inciting those eight soldiers, but also hates them and wants them dead because of Jim.
Sidenote: Jayde and Wren apparently both have something called a bloodmark, but I have no idea what that signifies yet. Curious to see if the book will explain. From context it feels like it's some thing only really strong Mods have, but it's not clear yet.
Back to the book. Tana finally links with Wren, but tells her no one is coming to rescue her. So Wren immediately breaks the connection to come up with a plan on her own.
She hasn't come up with anything by the time night falls and hot violent guy makes his return. We once again have to get a description of how he's so hot, too hot to be a soldier, so hot he should be a prostitute. Which...what? Wren, I'm begging you, FOCUS.
His name is Cross, and he's here to tell Wren she's going to be joining the military.
Ah, yes. Banter.
I need to be clear. If this book devolves into being a military training school romance, I am quitting. I've been through this with Fourth Wing. I can't do it again. I'm not strong enough.
Also, why the fuck is she joining the military? I guess we'll find out next chapter but this feels like a plot contrivance.
Well...okay. If she was being drafted into the lowest level as a grunt, and that was a common punishment in this world, it would be fine. But we've just found out that Cross is the captain of what appears to be an elite force (also the book is called Silver Elite, so...) so I'm betting she's about to be strongarmed into an elite military force, where she will prove to be mysteriously talented.
Deep sigh.

Jim taught me how to shield. How to construct a steel vault around my mind and keep it tightly locked and thick enough that nothing can penetrate it. Except that wasn’t all we practiced. He also showed me how to leave that vault door open a crack and empty the mind it protects. Clear that mind until it’s nothing but blackness. Silence. And then…
Think whatever you want them to hear.

“I’m the captain of Silver Block,” he continues.
I knew they were Silver Block. Their ironclad shields. Their interrogation methods. The smug confidence.
“Captain Cross,” I mock. “Aren’t you a little young for that rank?” He can’t be a day older than twenty-two.
He ignores that and says, “You can call me captain or sir. No preference.”
“What about Asshole? Can I call you that?”
Ah, yes. Banter.
