Wren is horrified to find out she's been drafted into the military. She tries to talk her way out of it, but no dice.

“If you think I’m a liar, then why are you sending me to the Program?” I grumble.

“Because I don’t trust you. Not one damn bit.” He shrugs. “Lieutenant Colonel Valence believes you’re not a threat. I’ve yet to determine whether I agree with her assessment. So until I do, I’m keeping you under close watch.”

“Don’t I feel special.”

“You should,” he says frankly. “Not many citizens get the opportunity to train for Silver Block. It’s a highly competitive program, and ninety percent of applicants are rejected. I suggest you don’t fuck this up. A post with Silver comes with its perks.”

So this isn't the real reason, right? If this turns out to be the real reason I will lose my mind, because that's stupid as fuck. That is the caliber of logic that led to the Navarre military putting all their rebel kids in the elite dragon riding unit and then being all *shocked Pikachu face* when they failed to die and instead started rebelling against the fucking government again.

Cross saw Wren shoot the coyote, which is why he thinks she's qualified to be in an elite military unit. He leaves her in her cell, and she finally starts crying. As she does, Wolf immediately links with her and tries to cheer her up. He tells her about the ocean while she tries to get herself together.

I still think Cross = Wolf. Maybe Cross will turn out to be just evil, or a red herring love interest or something, but I have low expectations because the author won't shut up about how hot he is and he's an asshole.

Next scene.

It's training time. Wren puts on her new uniform and is escorted to the training center. There are fifty other recruits, and one of her interrogators from yesterday is leading the session, so she's already off to a bad start.

Sidenote: Wren is constantly telling us female characters are "surprisingly pretty".

I choose the fourth option: a seat in the second row next to a young woman with light-brown hair arranged in a long braid and tied off with a blue bow. Her face is plain at first glance. On second glance, I notice her freckles and perfectly shaped lips. She’s surprisingly pretty.

This is like the third time in two chapters she's stopped to describe a woman and be shocked that she's attractive. I can't tell if this is just her being bisexual or what, but it's weird in the same way that her stopping to drool over Cross is weird.

Tablets are handed out, and Wren is horrified because she recognizes the soldier handing them out. Chapter end.

And now the chapters are weirdly short? If I see a parapet anywhere in this book, I am leaving.
