penwallaWren wakes up spooned by Kaine, aka hot asthma guy, and to Hadley looming over her.
Hadley tells Wren to get dressed and come with him, so she does.
Damn it, why is Wren so obsessed with how hot every person she sees is? Why do we need this information?
Unfortunately, Wren is of course being taken to Captain Cross, so we cannot be free. Wren once again has to tell us that Cross is hot as they stumble through some less-than-scintillating banter.
Wren, I am begging with my whole heart, STOP DOING ALL YOUR THINKING WITH YOUR PUSSY. Your uncle has been dead for like...three days. How is being attracted to the officer who forced you into the military and is clearly up to something regarding you a problem you are even having? Like it was at least understandable that Wren would notice this guy was hot in chapter one when we didn't know who he was, but he's not shown a single sign since then that he isn't a bad guy who would kill her if he knew what she was.
This isn't like with Xaden where the enemies part was mostly in Violet's head because Xaden kept helping her and not taking opportunities to harm her. We only know this guy probably won't hurt her because the author is a hack and keeps telling us that he is hot, and in the conventions of this genre that's what passes for relationship development.
I also don't understand why Wren participates in this banter, or keeps trying to provoke him, with no self-awareness about that being a bad idea. It would be much smarter for her to lay low, pretend to cooperate, and then try to make it look like she was just naturally not up to par with the others. She is drawing attention to herself, the very thing she needs to not do, the very thing that got her into this position.
Guys, Wren is dumb.
Wren, the obvious question is WHY Cross wants you here, so maybe, like, spend some brain cells on that and not on his shoulders.
Also, you've only tried one time to get cut. Maybe put some more effort in before you decide it's impossible.
Oh, and we find out the mean girl from last chapter is of course Cross's ex girlfriend.
And we find out that Captain Cross is actually...Cross Redden, aka the son of the head of the military. Chapter end.
I mean...I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised that Wren has already decided she likes Lyddie, even though the military murdered her uncle three days ago and you would think that after a lifetime of oppression Wren would hold a grudge. I'm not surprised that we already have an evil ex. I'm not surprised Cross is the son of a dictator.
I'm just disappointed.

I sneak him a sidelong look. He would probably be attractive if it weren’t for the way he presses his lips into a thin line, devoid of any trace of a smile or even a frown. There’s an air of detachment about him. Something clinical and cold. His face betrays not even a hint of emotion.
I wonder if he felt anything when he reported Morlee. I wonder if he feels anything now when he thinks about her hands, which are probably raw and brittle after shoveling salt from dawn till dusk for the last eight years.

I’m starting to realize it might be impossible for me to get in trouble. I’m not going anywhere unless Cross wants me to. And yet, what message does it send to his instructors if he allows an incompetent recruit to continue training for his precious Silver Block? He’d look weak. Incompetent himself. Which means I need to stay the course. The worse I perform, the quicker I’ll wake up from this nightmare.
My attention shifts to the captain. As much as I hate myself for it, I can’t help but admire the way his shirt hugs his broad shoulders, and how his dark hair falls in perfect disarray across his forehead.
