Silver Elite: Chapter 53
Nov. 30th, 2025 12:11 amCross sneaks Wren out of prison using a jammer. Xavier picks them up in a car, and Wren and Cross chat telepathically in the backseat.
Why would the Uprising have corrupted Cross's mother's mind?
Like, what do they gain from that? What's the reason? The only thing we have really established about the Uprising is that they are ruthlessly pragmatic, so what do they gain from corrupting Vinessa? And Wren herself says she has no evidence of what she's saying, none at all, and in fact lists the evidence against it: it's a rare ability and she literally only knows of one confirmed victim.
This is clearly a leap Wren is making because it's true and she needs to figure it out ASAP because the book is almost over. It would make much more sense for Wren to refuse to believe it even in the face of evidence of it, and in fact that would create a conflict between Cross and Wren that would be much more interesting to read about it. Cross should really be the one posing this theory, so that Wren has to choose between him and the Uprising and have it actually feel like a choice.
Wren and Cross exchange 'I love you"s.
They reach the Blacklands, and Wren realizes that Cross isn't coming with her--he's sending her alone. Which, of course he is. Why would she have assumed he was coming along?
Apparently Xavier is going with her instead. Wren is flabbergasted that her boyfriend, a high ranking military officer and the brother of the current leader of the government, has more important things to do than run off with her. He points out that someone needs to keep his brothers in line, since they're about to go a Mod murder spree.
Also, Cross is in trouble because Kaine told someone he and Wren were fucking, and we get this gem:
Notice that Kaine is getting more leeway than Lyddie here, who Wren was fantasizing about slapping. Could be that he's dead, could be that Wren just doesn't care about women as much as she cares about men who want to fuck her.
Wren and Cross make telepathic sad goodbyes. Chapter end.
l would love to know how Cross convinced Xavier to escort Wren through the Blacklands. Because Xavier has been a non-presence in this book so far and I have no idea what his motivations are, unless this is a plot by Cross to find the Uprising base to destroy it and Xavier has agreed so he can avenge his fallen girlfriend who was killed in the bombing a couple chapters ago.
Also, I love that Wren's plan to rescue herself was fifty percent Cross and Xavier rescuing her first.
“I think the Uprising corrupted your mother’s mind.”
“What?”
“I don’t believe she’s a Mod. But I have no evidence of anything I’m saying right now. We can demand answers from Adrienne when we get to their base.”
He goes silent for a moment, his jaw tightening. “So much for not harming civilians.”
I understand his anger. I can’t stomach the idea that they’re destroying civilian minds in their war against the Company. The only saving grace, after what I gleaned from Adrienne, is there aren’t too many corrupters on the Continent.
“I think it’s a rare ability. The fact that nearly all the Primes in society still have their minds intact tells me it’s not something they can readily do.”

Even as my heart squeezes for my fallen friend, my jaw drops in outrage. Kaine snitched on me? He’s lucky I don’t like to speak ill of the dead, that hellfucker.
Notice that Kaine is getting more leeway than Lyddie here, who Wren was fantasizing about slapping. Could be that he's dead, could be that Wren just doesn't care about women as much as she cares about men who want to fuck her.
